How Sweet This Is

Jute/Silk Flower Wreath tutorial!

in Create on 03/18/11

This is a SUPER easy wreath tutorial!

So here’s what you need. You might even have some of it laying around, and if you don’t make sure to use up those JoAnns or Michaels coupons!
You’ll need:

  • A round foam ring (wreath)
  • A roll of jute
  • Fabric glue
  • Pearlized colored pins
  • Silky fabric, mine was 100% polyester, labeled costume fabric.
  • Candle/lighter

First, start by adding a dot of glue to the foam ring and begin tightly wrapping the jute around it. I found it easiest to wrap the jute around the ring 7-10 times loosely, then pull it tight and use my hand to cinch it around the ring (almost like giving an Indian burn on someones arm)… make sense? That seemed to be easier than trying to hold the jute tight every time I looped it around.

Next, take you fabric and cut three circles for each flower- large, medium and small. They don’t have to be perfect circles, because we are going to melt the edges.

Then take your circles and hold the edges over a flame. You can use a clothespin to hold the fabric but I found I had more control with my fingers or you can use a lighter. You will have to play with it a little to see how long you need to hold the fabric over the flame to get the effect you want. If you hold it over too long you can get a hole or black edges. I kind of passed to edges over the top of the flame multiple times until it was just right.

Add a dot of fabric glue to the largest circle, then attach the medium and smaller circle all on top of each other.

Sorry for the switch of colors, some photos didn’t turn out so I had to go back.

Finally, take a coordinating pin and pin the flower to your jute wrapped wreath.

Continue on with your different colored flowers until you have everything just the way you like it!

Finally I added an additional piece of jute and pinned it to the back to use to hang it on the door.

There she is! Isn’t it SO cute! I am IN LOVE with it! And as Vanessa pointed out to me, because they flowers are just pinned on and not glued, I can change them up with EVERY SEASON!

Have fun! If you make one please send me a photo, I would love to see how it turns out!

So pretty! Way to use up those Joanne’s coupons. March Extravaganza only comes once a year 🙂
