DIY Baby Burp Cloths

in Create, Littles, Mommy Thoughts, Pregnancy and Fertility on 08/04/10

**Update 5/13- I have been using these burpcloths for almost 3 years now and they work great! They held up well, we still have them, and love them! We have used them for both girls.

Since becoming pregnant there have been a lot of DIY projects that I have considered taking on: bedding, closet dividers, reusable nursing pads, blankets, milestone onesies, etc… AND after passing on almost all of these things, and hearing from my SIL how much she loves a set of burp cloths that I made her, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to make these little cuties again for our little one.

Easy DIY Flannel Burpcloth

So, off to the fabric store I went… a yard of flannel and a yard of chenille. I cut them into rectangles about 18 inches long by 8 inches wide and got to sewing. I love this project and it seems to go over really well, so I thought I would share with you!

My two fabrics cut already into the rectangles…

Sew around the edges leaving about a 4 inch gap to turn in right side out…

Trim away excess fabric from all edges except the side with the gap,
you will need the excess fabric to close the hole. Turn all right side out…

Sew all around the edge of the cloth, about 1/4 of an inch in from
the edge, closing the opening and securing the fabric again…

All done! See how easy that was, and aren’t they cute 🙂 For mine I decided to try flannel on the one side, however with my SIL’s I just used a simple cotton fabric. I also imagine that instead of the chenille you could use terrycloth and that would work just as well… I plan on trying that too!

Also, I have a small mending sewing machine, so as long as you have something to sew a straight line with these are a simple, inexpensive and quick project! And what mom wouldn’t love something handmade over those plain white cloth diapers! Have Fun!

They are gorgeous. I go through about 400 a day and I use my husbands old cloth nappies (lent to me by my MIL) That’s sounds yucky re-reading it but they have been cleaned since he used them (haha!) Anyway my only bit of advice is to make them as absorbent as possible as some burps are pretty liquid!

Very cute! I’ve been trying to think of a simple, handmade gift for two upcoming baby showers. I just might do this one. Thanks for sharing!
