This week I am sharing Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah.

Here is the summary from Good Reads:

In the turbulent summer of 1974, Kate Mularkey has accepted her place at
the bottom of the eighth-grade social food chain. Then, to her
amazement, the “coolest girl in the world” moves in across the street
and wants to be her friend. Tully Hart seems to have it all—beauty,
brains, ambition. On the surface they are as opposite as two people can
be: Kate, doomed to be forever uncool, with a loving family who
mortifies her at every turn. Tully, steeped in glamour and mystery, but
with a secret that is destroying her. They make a pact to be best
friends forever; by summer’s end they’ve become
TullyandKate. Inseparable. So begins Kristin Hannah’s magnificent new novel.

For thirty years, Tully
and Kate buoy each other through life, weathering the storms of
friendship—jealousy, anger, hurt, resentment. They think they’ve
survived it all until a single act of betrayal tears them apart . . .
and puts their courage and friendship to the ultimate test.

Firefly Lane
Well this is the first negative review I will share with you. This book was miss for me, on many levels and I would give it 2 stars, maybe.
I had a really hard time getting into the book. I think I was probably 14 chapters in before I really even became interested in the storyline, and that was short-lived. The story is told in 3rd person, which I hated, however a friend pointed out that Harry Potter was also told in 3rd person, so in actuality I hated the way the author used her narrative to tell the story. The characters were underdeveloped and what she did develop was a shallow, selfish, self-serving, untrustworthy reporter with a “Little, Black Book” kind of betrayal, and a spineless, submissive, sad portrayal of a mom who I wanted to yell at multiple times throughout the book.
I got so frustrated with the conflict in the book and how it was so easily smoothed over with a “you trust me, right?” or “best friends forever, right?” and the lack of plot. We just floated through time skipping years in between. She tried to show us multiple relationships between moms and daughters but unfortunately I think they all failed- they were terrible.

And the ending, don’t even get me started. HATED. IT. It was a cop out with no real resolution and I was disappointed that I had even started reading it because I hated the ending so much.

So there you have it, needless to say I won’t be reading Kristin Hannah again.

I am currently in the middle of Crossed, and Forgotten God, and am looking forward to Insurgent!

**I’ve also decided to use the same
linky each time I post so that you won’t have to search back through
these posts to find a book, every week we can just add more books to the
list, or give your own review on a book that someone else may have
already linked 🙂
