How Sweet This Is

The external flash that changed my life!

in Photography on 01/26/12

A couple of weeks ago, while trying to take this picture…
(that’s Avi from the Singoffs Pentatonix, winners! I work with his brother)
I noticed my internal flash wasn’t working properly. It wouldn’t pop up, although I could hear the switch going off indicating every time it should’ve happened. Incredibly dissapointed and not really sure where to go, I turned to Google- haha! The Internet knows everything right!?
Well I did find a little tutorial showing me how to take my flash apart and flip a little rod that probably fell off of a probe. Sounds easy enough. So there I go, a little tiny screwdriver, taking my flash apart, seeing something about not touching a certain part of the exposed flash because of a shock, moving along, trying to reattach this little dilly-dally, then ZAP!! Actually it was more like…
ZAP!
Maybe even worse- I kid you not, the shock went through one hand, I felt it in my shoulders, and then my chest, and then my other hand. It was IN.SANE! I actually threw my camera about 8 feet in front of me; I don’t know if that was a result of the shock itself or just my natural instinct to get rid of the culprit.
I actually got the little knob back in place where I think it was supposed to go, then a whole other slew of problems arose. Then the flash didn’t pop up, but it fired, and then it smelled like something was burning… like on fire.
So I decided it was either take my camera into the shop to spend $150 to get it fixed or put that money towards an external flash that will be better for my photography anyway.
After a backorder fiasco, it came in the mail today and I am IN LOVE WITH IT! I cannot believe the difference in the lighting of my photos now.
This picture is taken with my internal flash. It was pretty dark outside already and not a lot of natural light in the house:

This picture is taken with no flash, same time:

And finally the picture with the external flash! It looks SO much more natural. The colors are still vibrant, but the definition isn’t lost:

Next, focus on the reflection of blue wall, E’s shirt and pants, E’s hair color and the difference in the carpet/tile:

Now with the external flash:

Next, look at the dogs hair color, the change in the white blanket and the dark shadows in the background:

Now with the external flash:

Amazing right!? I am so excited to have a flash that I can take pictures with indoors and not have them look terrible!

And just for fun- if she hides and you say “Where’s E?!” She sits super still, and believe me she is incredibly cute under there 🙂

So if you have a Nikon DSLR, this is the flash I bought, if you have a different flash I’d be curious what you use and how you like it?

oh my goodness, that external flash makes such a difference! I just got my very first DSLR for christmas {which I LOVE} but I refuse to use the internal flash just because I dislike the effect it has. Maybe I should start saving my pennies for an external flash… 🙂
