Cake Decorating 101- Lesson 1

In my post Seeing a Little Clearer I mentioned that I signed up for a cake decorating class… well Tuesday night was my first class!

Would you believe me if I told you that I made this!? No? Probably because I don’t know anyone named Shawn… but that’s ok, cause I didn’t make it… but I will! This will be our lesson next week… what!? I am supposed to make that in lesson TWO? Yes, my thoughts exactley, but I am SO excited!

Our first lesson was the basics. She went over how to make buttercream icing, how to fill the piping bag, how to frost the cake, etc. Next week we are supposed to come with a cake, pre-iced, ready to decorate. So I am going to make a chocolate cake (white cake is a waste of time… shh don’t tell the white cake lovers that) with chocolate buttercream filling and white buttercream frosting, dyed blue for the sky. Can you say, “goodbye 5lbs I lost”… The real challenge is going to be not eating every cake I decorate! But, don’t worry, I have a plan! I am going to bring the cakes to work and let them eat ’em (*snicker)!

So next Wednesday I hope to post a picture that looks very similar to this, and although I won’t want to, if it doesn’t look like this, I will still post it… most likely, unless it is REALLY bad! I just know that I am so anal and obsessive that I will spend WAY too much time trying to make it look perfect… so that will be another challenge! This is a learning process right!? My instructor told me that at the end of the class we will all be great, but I hate to say it, I’ve seen some of the photos and that is just NOT true… it can get ugly! So follow along, here we go!

** I was going to post a picture of one of ugly rainbow cakes I have seen, and then it occured to me, I don’t know who all looks at this blog, and what a jerk I would feel like if that picture happened to belong to someone who read this post… not good, so instead, just take my word for it! 🙂
