JBF Childrens Sale: Consigning and Volunteering Tips!

in Shop on 02/24/14

Just Between Friends, also known as JBF, is quickly approaching again! If your life feels like an ever revolving door of rotating your kids’ clothing and sizes, then you should be just as excited as I am! And to help you get the most out of the sale, we’re sharing JBF consigning and volunteering tips.

Consigning and Volunteering Tips for JBF Childrens Sale

A good tip, in our opinion, needs to save time and money, and we assure that these will. Some come from my experience and some from the great resources on JBF’s site. Since the success of JBF really depends on getting the word out there and encouraging people to shop, we want to make sure you know when the sale is being held…so you can come shop!

JBF Consignment Tips

TAGGING:

  1. Make sure your hangers are like a question mark when you look at the front of your garment. There are so many items that if your item faces the wrong way, it will be passed. Plus it’s a hassle to try and change it while you’re dropping off.
  2. Children’s size 4 and smaller must be on the child’s hangers. When I go shopping I always save my little hangers. You can get them for free from a few places as well. Visit JBF for more info.
  3. Hang your PJ’s, onesies and knit pants as well. Better yet, group them together. I will pass up singular items unless it’s a steal for a name-brand, almost new item. Plus it will save you time on tagging!
  4. If you use a tagging gun, please go through the tag or the seam. It is so disappointing to get home and have a hole in something you just bought. Same goes for using the gigantic safety pins. Try to use the smallest pin that you can.
  5. Triple check your items for holes and stains. Volunteers are going through the clothing and pulling anything that is not of good quality, so save yourself the time of tagging an item that won’t get on the sales floor. A simple rule of thumb is to make sure it’s something you would purchase.
  6. Make sure when hanging your items that everything is secured. Pants need to be secured with safety pins to the upper part of the hanger, not the bottom arm. There are times when an item has not been secured well and falls from the hanger. It can’t be sold like this, and you don’t want to lose any opportunity to earn your money.
  7. Double check DVD, game and CD cases to make sure the movie is actually there. Also, make sure all pieces to puzzles and board games are included.
  8. If you’ve never tagged before, the process is super easy! Head to JBF for the details on their tagging and barcoding system.
  9. Some things to have on hand when starting the tagging process: Febreeze, Downy wrinkle release, safety pins, packing tape, Scotch tape, white cardstock, large ziploc bags and hangers.
  10. Make sure you put batteries in your toys and check that they are in working order. I will pass an item up if I can’t guarantee that it works. Batteries can be purchased at the dollar store.
  11. Consignors get in to shop before the general public–that’s another great reason to consign!
  12. This article has some great tips on how to price your items! When pricing remember what you’d be willing to pay for the item. Also, something I seriously consider when shopping is how much I could get the item for brand new on clearance somewhere. If you’re gently-used item is higher priced than that, it might be passed up.

VOLUNTEERING/BARTERING:

Another way to earn more money and get into the sale earlier is by volunteering and bartering. You can volunteer hours at the sale, either at the register or on the floor, and help with presale and/or clean-up. You can also barter hours. Barter positions include bringing meals/drinks for the volunteers, marketing for the sale, or providing other small items that are needed throughout the event.

Each volunteer position and barter has an hour figure assigned to it. You can add your hours earned and get pre-sale passes worth anywhere from 4-16 hours.

The week of the sale I will be sharing some great shopping tips, so stay tuned! Below are the dates and times from drop-offs, as well as the shopping schedule. Laura, the owner of the Visalia/Fresno sale, is active on Facebook at Just Between Friends Visalia/Fresno. Make sure to follow her there to get other great tips!

Do you consign, volunteer, shop or all three? Any other tips you can share?
