How Sweet This Is

DIY Plastic Bag Storage

in Create on 12/20/11

Do you find yourself with an overwhelming number of plastic bags around this time of year!? I know I do! Plastic bags and cardboard boxes are my nemeses right now, so I had to find something to do with them all. It seems to be a never ending job for me. I always try and remember to take reusable bags when shopping, but trying to remember and actually doing it are two different things. So inevitably I end up with a thousand and four plastic bags shoved into my pantry. We use them when we can, but I was having trouble keeping them all contained in the plastic IKEA thing with holes everywhere.
So I decided it was time to create a solution. I had everything I thought I needed to create this little project, so I sat down and started sewing!
What you’ll need:
Scrap Fabric, mine was probably 2.5 – 3 feet long and 1.5 to 2 feet wide, you might just have to eye it 🙂
Elastic
Jute or Ribbon
Sewing necessities
First, fold your fabric in half length wise right side facing in and sew the edges together to create a tube.

Next, fold out the edges on both ends and pin.

Sew around both edges leaving at least 1/2 inch for the elastic to lace through. Make sure you leave a small whole to be able to insert the elastic, don’t connect your starting stitch to you ending stitch.

Cut a piece of elastic the width of your tube, give or take an inch (this will be roughly half the size of the width of your original piece of fabric, you want it to contract back up.) Lace your elastic through each edge, I safety pinned on end to the fabric itself so that if I accident let go I wouldn’t lose it in the tube).

When you have your elastic all the way though, sew the ends together.

Turn everything right side out and both ends should look like this.

Next grab a piece of matching ribbon or jute. Attach two pieces to one end on both sides (so that you have two pieces to tie around something)

Finally, STUFF with all those annoying bags… pull from either end when needed!

And capture the cutest little girl ever enjoying her favorite place to play! Well, that part is just for me 🙂

Happy Tuesday friends! Hope you are all done with your Christmas shopping 🙂

This really makes me want to learn how to sew. I would love to get a handle on those plastic bags. Very cute!

Great idea! Seriously, my cabinet is being taken over by plastic bags right now. This is on my to-make list (which is waaay too long).
